Studio: Producer/Engineer/Mixer

Originally from New Zealand, Alex has been based in Ireland since 2012. He is the head engineer at Grouse Lodge Residential Recording Studios, and his career includes working as a touring musician, producer, recording & mix engineer, and obsessive problem-solver! When not at Grouse Lodge, he works out of a variety of studios around Ireland and overseas.

Alex has worked on award-winning and Number 1 albums across a wide array of genres. He has worked with producers such as George Clinton, Garret "Jacknife" Lee, and Starsmith, and with artists such as Parliament Funkadelic, Sam Fender, James Vincent McMorrow, Lankum, and Catfish & The Bottlemen. Alex produced, recorded and mixed the critically acclaimed debut album “Hemet” by Niamh Regan, which was nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year 2020. He also recorded, mixed and co-produced Rachael Lavelle’s album “Big Dreams”, which was nominated for the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year 2023. Full client list can be found on the right.

In short – Alex lives, breathes, and eats music of every kind. His diverse work across a range of genres reflects his broad musical knowledge, which enables him to bring an objective perspective to all his projects.

His aim is to find and bring out the essence of any music that he is working on - at the heart of every song is human expression. Alex’s philosophy is artist-centric – he wants to hear an artist’s music from their perspective, in order to get inside their vision and to realize it fully. The ultimate aim is to find what will serve the song in order for it to reach its full potential.

Musician:

Far from being purely a technician, Alex is a musician with diverse skills and tastes. While his primary instrument is the trombone, he is equally comfortable on keys/synths, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and programming. He has toured with high-calibre bands throughout Europe, the USA, Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Alex grew up studying jazz on the trombone, winning several awards, including being a Finalist for Best Folk Album at the NZ Music Awards. He played drums in rock bands in his teens, before finding his way into folk and Irish traditional music. Since relocating to Ireland, Alex has dug out a niche in the local music community, performing regularly with bands such as Irish neo-trad group Aldoc, indie-folk band The Young Folk, and contemporary Irish ensemble The Irish Memory Orchestra. He is regularly in demand as a session musician in the Irish music industry.
